Higgins Wins 2011 Rally America Championship

Subaru Driver David Higgins Wins 2011 Rally America National Championship

-5th Rally America title in past six years for Subaru Rally Team USA-

CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins has won the 2011 Rally America National Championship with a 2nd Overall finish at the season finale, the New England Forest Rally, this past weekend. In a hotly contested season Higgins and his co-driver Craig Drew piloted their BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car to three victories and two 2nd Overall finishes in the six-event Rally America National Championship. The 2011 driver’s title is the third for Higgins in the USA having won the SCCA ProRally Championship in 2002 and 2003. Higgins also won the British Rally Championship in 2004.

“It’s amazing and hasn’t really sunk in yet,” explained Higgins at the podium celebration. “The level of competition was really fierce all year, and it was a big challenge for me to come back to the USA after seven years away and adjust to new events, a co-driver I had never worked with before as well as new car. But everything meshed really well and our Subaru STI was a joy to drive fast. Driving for Subaru is every rally driver’s dream as the brand is so famous for rallying, so this is something really special for me.”

RallyCar New England Forest Rally Results

L'Estage Wins New England Forest Rally

NEWRY, ME (July 17, 2011) -- One of the most spectacular seasons in Rally America Championship history came to an end at the New England Forest Rally with Antoine L'Estage and co-driver Nathalie Richard atop of the NEFR podium for the second consecutive year. The privateer Rockstar Rally Team took the lead from the start and held it for the entire duration of the event, winning eight of the eleven special stages. L'Estage finished 48 seconds ahead of Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins.

Higgins and co-driver Craig Drew focused on getting to the finish having to place fourth or better here to secure the National Championship win. Higgins faced overheating issues on Day 1 and fuel pressure issues on Day 2, but eventually finished second overall to win the title back for Subaru. This victory marks the third American Championship title of Higgins' rally career.

Rounding out the podium was Super Production (SP) class driver Travis Hanson and co-driver Terry Hanson. The privateer father/son team put the finishing touches on their flawless season by placing third overall in Maine and third overall in the National Championship. The Hansons dealt with severe overheating issues late in Day 2 while battling to stay ahead of Tom Lawless and co-driver Alex Kihurani. Hanson edged Lawless out of a podium spot by just 7 seconds. Hanson leaves NEFR with the SP class win and a dominant Super Production Championship title victory.

Bill Caswell Talks About His Movie-Destined Start In Rally Racing

Most movies about racing have a lot of scenery in common; the track, the pits, the mechanics, the fancy car, the painted helmet, the corporate logos, the sponsors congratulating the driving hero on their big win at the end of the movie. This movie has, well, none of that. In fact, the deep-voiced movie trailer intro would probably go a little more like 'In a world... where one man... with no tools... no race shop... builds his own rally car... and takes on the mega-race-teams... everyone said that he had no chance. But Caswell... with no pit crew... no sponsors... and running out of parts... is going to Prove. Them. Wrong.'

The movie will star actor Jeremy Renner in the true story of Bill Caswell, who bought a $500 car from Craigslist, built it to rally, and then went on to compete at the World Rally Championship event in Mexico in that very same car. He doesn't come in first place by making a pass in the last turn. There isn't a big sponsor that turns him down in the first half of the movie who then hires him after he wins the big race. Instead, there's something else: a whole lot of adventure. When you give it your best shot, without really knowing what's going to happen, and decide that it is more important to do something and live your life now than to sit back and wait until you sometime, maybe, have it all figured out, that's adventure.

'I was there at the very literal beginning of Bill's rally career', said Anders Green of NASA Rally Sport, a sanctioning body that organizes rallies in the US. 'I met him and his codriver Sam Smith just a few hours before the start of his first event, Rally Tennessee. No pit crew. No rally experience. But he had a huge determination that he was going to go rally racing, no matter what the obstacles were.'
