Event Coverage: D1 All Stars USA vs Japan

Gallery Page 1 |

1st: Vaughn Gittin (USA)
2nd: Tatsuya Sakuma (Japan)
3rd: Toshiki Yoshioka (Japan)

The D1 event first came over from Japan to the United States in 2003. In just 2 short years, an American, Jr Vaughn Gittin, from Team Falken has rose to the top of the competition defeating all other rivals.

This event showcased the best Americans vs the best Japanese drivers, and on this day it was the USA standing on the top of the podium. Jr let it all hang out in his Ford Mustang GT with his pedal to the metal drifts aggressively pushing the other competitors to the max defeating D1 series champions Kazama and Imamura in the process.

D1 Crashes, Results and Conspiracy Theories

D1 news...our photographers took 4 DVDs worth of images from the event and we'll have them posted up once we sort through everything. Here are your top 3 finishes.

1st: Vaughn Gittin
2nd: Tatsuya Sakuma
3rd: Toshiki Yoshioka

Check out the AEM crash vid from D1. Dibs on all parts before it hits the junkyard.

JR won the event in the falken mustang. we saw some of his tandem runs and he plain killed it with balls to the wall speed off the banking into the turns. Screw the conspiracy talk of the event being rigged; nobody at the event can argue that he didn't win this contest on his own merits. The japanese drivers did well but couldn't hang w/ him. If he did this in a mustang; imagine what he could do in a real drift car. ha!

Rumor has it that HKS and Tanaguchi is screwing D1 and their politics to run Formula D next year. Tanaguchi wants to promote his NOB line of apparel and specialty products here in the US next year so this would be a good fit for them. Look for more japanese drivers to come out of the woodworks to run in Formula D next year as well.

What is This???

Just came back from setup day at D1 USA vs Japan at Irwindale Speedway, and this time they have setup the course in reverse. Meaning that it is a mirror image of the layout before. Most of the drifts are now right turns, will this change the performance of any of the drivers??? Stay tuned...

Kazama wins D1GP 2005 Series

The 2005 D1 Grand Prix final battle took place at the legendary Tsukuba Circuit. The two potential candidates for this year’s series champion were Masao Suenaga in the Amemiya Rx7, and Yasuyuki Kazama in the Kei Office Silvia. Kazama held a big lead in the series until the 6th round, where Suenaga had closed the point gap.

Suenaga fought his way up to the semi finals this round and went against Youichi Imamura in the APEX Rx7. Nobushige Kumakubo of Team Orange was matched up against Tatsuya Sakuma for the other semi final battle. Kumakubo lost the match due to an unfortunate spin on his first run. The finals consisted of Imamura and Sakuma. Imamura closed in on Sakuma all throughout the S turn, and stayed right on his tail. Imamura had come up to first place in the Tsukuba Circuit Final round and third overall in the points series.

At the end of the series, Kazama had stayed on top with 97 points but Suenaga was just a hairline away at 96 points. Now that the points season is over and the USA vs Japan All Star Event is just weeks away, the big question is will Kazama take the crown once again at the notorious Irwindale Speedway?

Kazama and his famous green Kei Office S15 has defeated many US and Japanese drivers at the Irwindale track. He has won first place in both the 2004 and 2005 D1GP opening rounds at Irwindale making him the candidate to do so again. “Kazama owns the bank” said Keiichi Tsuchiya, D1 chief judge, while commentating on the 05 race. Can he climb to victory once again? Will a new competitor challenge him to take that honor? With a handful of new cars and new faces, the battles will be fierce. Make it a point to be part of this memorable event! December 17th will go down in history as the best International drift battle of 2005.

Who is next?

The D1GP USA vs. Japan event this year will be full of excitement! On December 16th and 17th Irwindale Speedway will be filled with plumes of smoke and a sea of fans. Kazama, Imamura, Nomura, and Kumakubo better keep their guard up because the USA has many drivers that will give them a run for their money. With the likes of Forsberg, Gitten, Angelo, Hubinette, and Millen, there will be intense battles all day and all night! If that wasn't enough, there will be a handful of amateur drivers giving 110% in hopes of becoming the next D1 licensed driver. There are some serious talents awaiting to be discovered. Taka Aono in his AE86 Corolla and Hiro Sumida in his JZX90 Chaser. Casper Canul and Lance Feliciano in their S14s. Robbie Nishida from team “Hey Man”, and Rod Millen from team Grenade. These guys are sure to make an impact and could become the next superstars of drifting.

MTV Films Acquires Rights to Ecko Title

New York, NY/Santa Monica, CA (December 8, 2005) – MTV Films, a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIAB) today announced that it has acquired the feature film rights to Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, the highly anticipated videogame from Atari (Nasdaq: ATAR) and Marc Ecko Enterprises. The videogame is scheduled for a February 2006 release for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, for the Xbox® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and for Windows.

Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure adaptation as a feature project promises to be an homage to graffiti’s rich culture. Told through an alternate reality in a futuristic universe, the game represents the culmination of seven years of story and character development by fashion pioneer Marc Ecko, the visionary behind several of today’s most respected youth lifestyle brands. Mr. Ecko will serve as producer on the project with MTV Films’ Gregg Goldin, who brought the project to the company. Jason Weiss and David Gale will be developing on behalf of MTV Films. “Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure” will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

“We are eager to continually tap into the unique culture that exists in the video gaming world because these types of projects have a unique connection to the MTV audience,” said David Gale, Executive Vice President, MTV Films. “Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure is an incredibly cool and different title – and one that we believe will redefine the industry. We are extremely excited to join forces early on and tap into the creativity of Marc Ecko and Atari on this unique project.”

“When I first began working on ‘Getting Up’ seven years ago, I wanted to create a storyline that provided a rare look inside of one of the most influential, yet often overlooked, artistic movements in recent history. Today, graffiti is a global cultural phenomenon and few understand its impact better than MTV, pioneers in its use as a motion graphics tool nearly two decades ago. I am delighted to have the ability to bring the depth of our story to life on film and look forward to working with the great team MTV has assembled,” added Marc Ecko.

About “Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure”
Set in the city of New Radius, Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure features a world where freedom of expression is suppressed and graffiti has been outlawed by a tyrannical city government. In the game, players assume the role of Trane as they learn and master various graf skills as they journey from toy (beginner) to legend. During their quest, players find themselves with an even greater burden – to use their high-wire graffiti talents to expose the oppressive mayor and rid the city of his stranglehold.

An incredible lineup of Hollywood talent is providing voices for the characters featured in Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. Sean “Diddy” Combs, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy, George Hamilton, Giovanni Ribisi, Adam West, Andy Dick, Charlie Murphy, The RZA, and Michael “M.C. Serch” Berrin will all add their voice to the first truly authentic video game based on urban culture and graffiti art. Hip-hop artist Talib Kweli is the voice of Trane – the game’s lead character.
