Rally America Olympus Rally Results

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana took his second win of the season at the Olympus Rally on Sunday, after a fierce Day 2 battle with Andrew "ACP" Comrie-Picard.

"It was awesome - we tied to the 10th of a second on the first stage of the last leg," said Pastrana at the finish. "The competition was amazing."

Pastrana and co-driver Christian Edstrom hauled into the lead at the Olympus Rally early Sunday, after their Subaru teammate Ken Block suffered a turbo problem and dropped off the pace.

NOS Energy's Andrew "ACP" Comrie-Picard and co-driver Robbie Durant finished in second place overall, unable to make up time to the Subaru crew in the final stages while fighting an ailing transmission.

"We lost third and fourth gear in the last two stages today, and had to hold it in fifth," said Comrie-Picard late Sunday. "But this finish means we're still in the championship lead, and we're happy."

Super GT Round 2 Suzuka Report

ZENT CERUMO SC430 Stages Dramatic Come-from-Behind Win!
Yuji Tachikawa now all-time record holder with 11 career GT wins

In the KEIHIN SUZUKA 2&4 RACE, Round 2 of the 2009 AUTOBACS SUPER GT held at the Suzuka Circuit (one lap 5.807 km x 52 laps) in Mie Pref. on April 19, the ZENT CERUMO SC430 driven by Yuji Tachikawa and Richard Lyons came from behind for a dramatic win.

The race started exactly at 14:00. In the early stages of the race there was a close race for the lead between the pole starting MOTUL AUTECH GT-R driven by Satoshi Motoyama and the ZENT CERUMO SC430 driven by Richard Lyons, but the ZENT CERUMO team's routine pit stop took longer than its rivals and by the time Tachikawa got on the track for his stint after the driver change, the SC430 had dropped to 4th position. Undaunted, Tachikawa began his chase and soon recovered to 3rd position. In the meantime, the MOTUL AUTECH GT-R running alone in the lead was having tire trouble and losing speed.

This allowed the PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 to take the lead and Tachikawa moved into 2nd. Then Tachikawa pushed on to work his way past PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 driven by Jyuichi Wakisaka with four laps remaining in the race. Just after this there was a multi-car crash behind the leaders that brought out the safety car while the track was being cleared. Eventually the race ended with the leaders ru nning in the same order behind the safety car, giving the ZENT CERUMO SC430 a well-earned come-from-behind victory.

MODE Racing Genesis Shakedown

MODE Racing takes their Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T out for the first time at the Super Lap Battle in Phoenix, AZ!

(Orange County, CA) With only a few days of ownership of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0 T (call sign: MDR-1) the MODE Racing crew took a drive to Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix Arizona to do a quick shakedown event at the NASA Super Lap Battle Time Attack.

The MDR-1 Genesis Coupe was taken out of its trailer ready for battle equipped with only Motul Racing Fluids, Toyo R888 tires, Enkei NT03+M wheels, and an APR GTC-300 rear wing. The driver, Billy Brooks, was ready to see how the MDR-1 would stand up against the other street driven, race prepped vehicles in the paddock. After a quick stint in the autocross course at Firebird International Raceway, Billy Brooks was confident that the car will work fine on the track.

After the first practice session and with a few hot laps completed, the MDR-1 came in with a content driver. “The car will obviously need some work with suspension and handling but most of all, it needs power.” Billy Brooks commented, “I believe that MODE Racing will be able to untap the power of the Genesis 2.0 Turbo motor and it will be a whole different car, come next event. Now that I’ve felt how the car is on the track, MODE Racing will take that input that I have received and apply it to our racing products”

Fire & Ice 350Z

This is a pretty sweet feature from our friends over at Carbon8 Magazine. Check out their site for the complete article and photos.

Seeing these two lovely Z’s side by side makes me conflicted. It’s almost like the feeling I get when I’m waiting in line before boarding “The Sasquatch” at Six Flags. I feel my blood run cold while my palms get hot and sweaty. Depending on your driving mood wit you might choose the fiery burn of our lady in red or you might opt for the cool stealth of our boy in blue. Either way you can’t lose.

“When I first bought the car I didn’t really intend on doing so much work to it” said owner Andy Kim when I asked him about the origins of his red dragon. “I really just wanted to put some wheels and tires on it” he said “but because of my job, I almost had no choice” he joked. As the Internet Parts Manager at Performance Nissan in Duarte, California Andy has the luxury of working with some very cool brands.

“I wasn’t overly keen about the whole twin turbo thing but when HKS offered me the opportunity to sport one of their GT-RS kits, how could I refuse?” Good question. “I’ve had to make some personal sacrifices with this car (like the fact it’s not longer a daily), but I’m really proud of what it’s done for our business” Andy confessed. “It’s been such a high profile build that it’s attracted a lot of business for us that we might not otherwise have had.”

Sordo Tests the Hybrid C4

Dani Sordo has given Citroen’s C4 WRC HYbrid4 its first proper competitive asphalt test on a selection of roads in Portugal.

The concept car, which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show last year, was developed using Citroen’s current World Rally Championship contender as a base, with the addition of electrical propulsion system, weighing 150 kg, to supplement its petrol engine, gearbox, and transmission.

The hybrid system fitted to the car features four different modes. In internal combustion mode, the car behaves exactly like one of the Citroen Total team’s regular petrol engined C4 WRCs. In internal combustion mode with energy recovery switched on, braking performance is improved and a 990-cell Ion Lithium battery mounted above the petrol tank gets charged.

On road sections and in the service park, an electric mode can be selected which engages a 125 kW electric motor to drive the rear wheels only. Finally, boost mode - which employs both the petrol engine and the electric motor - gives an extra 300 Nm of torque.

Formula DRIFT Round 1: Streets of Long Beach Results; Tuerck Takes the Season Opening Victory

Long Beach, Calif. – April 11, 2009 – Formula DRIFT Round 1: Streets of Long Beach kicks off their 6th championship season to a sell-out crowd. Ryan Tuerck and the Gardella Racing / Mobil 1 Pontiac Solstice took home the victory and leads the 2009 Professional Championship Point Standings.

The Long Beach Grand Prix Street Course hosted the season opening event to a standing room only crowd. The infamous track is the only course that is held on actual city streets making it one of the more unique drifting courses in the nation. The 2009 season included the addition of the veteran driver, Tony Angelo, as a new judge to the series. It also marked the first 2-day event structure of the season and the change of competition formats. This season will be the first time a Top 32 format will be utilized in the Pro Championship series creating more drifting competition rounds and more action for the fans.

“Despite the current economic state, Formula DRIFT has continued to push forward and the success of this season opening event has proved that drifting has continued to grow,” said Ryan Sage, vice president of marketing and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “Without the support of the fans, teams, and sponsors Formula DRIFT would not have been able to pull off this exciting event and we look forward to the rest of the 2009 season.”
