What is Drifting?

In drifting, the objective is to slide a vehicle at speeds and angles that blah, blah, blah, blah, blah....just watch the video...

How to Drift

Drifting requires excellent car control and much practice. Though there are different styles of drifting, there are only a handful of techniques that will get your car sideways.

Here, we will refer to Best Motoring's Drift Bible featuring Keichi Tsuchiya(Drift King). In this classic video, he goes over 6 techniques that he uses to drift. The first 3 techniques are for those just starting out, while the last 3 are for the more advanced.

  • E-brake - Using the side e-brake to initiate the drift.
  • Shift Lock - By releasing the clutch, the rear tires will lock up and cause the tail to slide out.
  • Power Over - Powering out at the exit of a turn to swing the tail out for a drift
  • Braking - Using precise braking and shifting to initiate the drift w/o locking up the rear tires.
  • Feint - By feigning to the outside before turning into the corner, the weight of the car will shift quickly, whipping the tail of the car out during the turn.
  • Dynamic - Using throttle control to initiate a high speed drift
This is only a quick reference guide, we suggest watching Best Motoring's Drift Bible for in-depth detail and step by step instructions as well as practice sessions to build up and hone your skills. Available Here!

This is another great video to check out to learn how to drift. Famed D1 driver and fan favorite, Nomuken, gets behind the wheel of his Skyline GT-R and shows what it takes to get your car sideways. Available Here!

Video Game Drifting

Forza Motorsport 2
Wow! The physics of the new Forza 2 engine has surpassed Gran Turismo. And yes, drifting here can now be done online in multiplayer mode so you can drift with your friends. Nothing like catching a good line with multiple drivers, saving the replay, and snapping pics and uploading to the web. Just awesome and the customization of performance and looks of your car make it that much sweeter. Live Sockets Drift Car FTW!

Just need a couple of simple tid bits:

  • Upgrade that horsepower, you'll need it to continue those long, flowing drifts.
  • Turn off the ASM and TCS. Go ahead and leave the ABS on.
  • If you are just beginning, go ahead and use the ebrake to initiate to make getting sideways much easier.

Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo has been the OG game for drifters with it really catching on in Gran Turismo 3. GT4 however, came with much change to the car physics which provided a kickback at the end of the drift. This definitely increased the difficulty and in some ways decreased the fun. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue comes equipped with a drift mode as this aspect has really exploded in the community. The question is when will GT5 actually come out???

Grid
The drift mode in this game is not very realistic but boy is it addictive. The game setup makes it easy for you to get sideways and probably has the best replay in the business. Also, it helps to have the flashbacks to save your ass if you mess up at the end of a long link of drifts...

Need for Speed Carbon
For those who want an easier fix, try the latest Need for Speed Carbon. More of an arcade-style racer, this is fun and satisfying for both the hardcore and casual drifter as the cars are setup and ready to drift. With its tight canyon courses you can drift down the mountainside but avoid the cliffs as you can find yourself flying off the edge. For maximum points pour on the speed and link those drifts!!!

Test Drive Unlimited
The only mass multiplayer online racing game on the market. To pull a drift simply hit the ebrake with your RWD cars and you find yourselves sideways. Upgrade your car with more horses at the hidden tuner shops to get those drifts longer and head to Tantalus for some multiplayer drifts down the touge.

R/C Drift Cars

RC Drift Car

There are now drift cars featuring your favorite drift spec cars and professional drivers. These cars can get sideways with ease and costs much less than buying a real drift car. With a couple of friends, you can create your own course and have a friendly competition or go for some twin drift(tsuiso) action. Available Here!
